Elmer Week - Reception

Just before the Easter break our Reception children took part in an Elmer the Elephant themed week.

Inspired by the multi-coloured squares that make up Elmer, we have been finding out about shapes. We started by making jungle animals using shapes. We all wanted to take some photos of our great work, so the children showed their friends how to use the digital cameras and we got snapping.

We experimented to find out which shapes roll and which ones slide. Then they made an amazing skateboard for the elephant using cylinders that we found were the best shape to roll. Everyone had a try!

With our new knowledge of shapes that roll or slide, the children wrote a letter to the elephant to tell him which shapes were best at rolling and later in the week, we even got a reply.

We finished with cubes. We started with small cubes, which the children had fun trying to make using different resources. Finally working together to problem solve we made giant cube shaped dens using poles. They thought very hard about where each pole should go to build the cube shape.

A superb week of multi-coloured shape fun!
